Who We Are
VitriMatics designs and builds high-precision modular instruments for cryo-EM sample preparation. A key focus is keeping established cryo-EM systems operating reliably and extending their usable lifetime through practical improvements and upgrades.
With more than 25 years of experience in scientific instrumentation and a focus on cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) vitrification, VitriMatics develops tools based on hands-on technical knowledge and direct experience with laboratory equipment and workflows.
We work closely with users and research groups, as well as with partner organizations that specialize in workflow and sample preparation optimization. This allows us to ensure that our instruments fit into real laboratory environments and evolving experimental needs.
Our approach combines engineering experience, collaborative development, and precision design to deliver robust tools for everyday laboratory use.
Leadership
VitriMatics was founded by Frank Nijpels, one of the co-inventors of the Vitrobot, the gold standard instrument for cryo-EM sample vitrification, and inventor of the VitroJet system.
Frank brings exceptional depth of knowledge to cryo-EM sample preparation, from workflow design to instrument-level understanding of the tools the field depends on. This includes servicing and maintaining Vitrobots, helping facilities extend the lifetime of their instruments and protect long-standing investments in proven technology.
This expertise directly informs VitriMatics' approach: developing modular upgrades and integrated solutions, like VitriClip, that enhance existing infrastructure and simplify the path from sample to structure.
VitriMatics US was founded by Giulia Weissenberger, and brings over 10 years of experience in product development and product management for cryo-EM sample preparation devices.
Her work focuses on translating user and technical requirements into practical product designs, ensuring that instruments are well aligned with real laboratory needs and workflows.
